Forensic Specialisms, Lectureships & PhD Studentships

Forensic Specialisms

Forensic science extends far beyond the traditional laboratory disciplines. Specialist practitioners apply expertise from a particular scientific field to questions arising within criminal investigations and the courts.

These specialisms can include forensic anthropology, archaeology, entomology, botany, ecology and other biological and physical sciences, as well as highly specialised areas of analytical science.

The nature of the work varies considerably between disciplines. Some specialists work primarily in laboratories or universities, while others may attend crime scenes, examine human remains or other evidence, undertake research, produce expert reports and provide expert evidence in court.

Specialist forensic careers offer the opportunity to develop deep expertise in a particular field and apply that knowledge to complex, real-world investigations.

Building a Specialist Forensic Career

There is no single route into a forensic specialism. Most practitioners begin with a strong academic foundation in a relevant scientific discipline before developing specialist forensic knowledge through further study, research and practical experience.

Depending on the discipline, this may involve an MSc, PhD or professional training, although the qualifications and experience required vary considerably between specialisms.

Opportunities aren't limited to established practitioner posts.

Research assistant positions, PhD studentships, university roles and early-career research opportunities can all form part of the route towards becoming a recognised specialist.

Be Moore brings together opportunities across specialist forensic practice, research and academia – helping you find the next step in developing your expertise.

Find the opportunity that takes your expertise further.
