Crime Scene Investigation
A career as a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) puts you at the heart of a forensic investigation. CSIs identify, document, recover and preserve evidence from crime scenes, helping investigators understand what has happened and providing evidence that may ultimately be presented in court.
It is a role requiring exceptional attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to work methodically under pressure. Crime scenes can be unpredictable and sometimes distressing, so CSIs must remain objective while maintaining meticulous records and protecting the integrity of the evidence they recover.
For the right person, it is a challenging and rewarding career where no two days are the same and your work can make a genuine contribution to an investigation.
Starting your CSI career
There is no single route into crime scene investigation and entry requirements vary between police forces. Depending on the role, employers may ask for GCSEs, A levels or equivalent qualifications, while others look for a degree in forensic science or another relevant scientific discipline.
Qualifications are only part of the picture. Employers also look for practical skills including attention to detail, communication, problem solving, resilience and the ability to work accurately as part of an investigative team.
