Interest in forensic science has grown in recent years partly fuelled by the popularity of TV dramas. This has led to many more people gaining an understanding of what a Crime Scene Investigator, CSI, does.
A good CSI must be able to quickly take control of a crime scene, assess what is important and what is not relevant, be obsessed with detail and accurate dispassionate recording in circumstances that can be very demanding and deeply upsetting for all involved. You will have the added pressure of knowing that your report might possibly be challenged or subjected to intense scrutiny in the court of law.
For the right person it is an intensely challenging and rewarding career where the science is continually evolving and no two days are the same.
Most forces require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English, Maths and Science. Some forces may prefer A levels or equivalent and some may ask for a degree in forensic science or a relevant science subject. It is also favourable to have some experience in police work or a related field such as a laboratory or intelligence gathering.
Closing date: 28th March 2025
