Interest in forensic science has grown in recent years partly fuelled by the popularity of TV dramas. This has led to many more people gaining an understanding of what a Crime Scene Investigator, CSI, does.
A good CSI must be able to quickly take control of a crime scene, assess what is important and what is not relevant, be obsessed with detail and accurate dispassionate recording in circumstances that can be very demanding and deeply upsetting for all involved. You will have the added pressure of knowing that your report might possibly be challenged or subjected to intense scrutiny in the court of law.
For the right person it is an intensely challenging and rewarding career where the science is continually evolving and no two days are the same.
Most forces require a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English, Maths and Science. Some forces may prefer A levels or equivalent and some may ask for a degree in forensic science or a relevant science subject. It is also favourable to have some experience in police work or a related field such as a laboratory or intelligence gathering.

West Yorkshire Police, the lead Force for Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Scientific Support Services, is looking to recruit two Forensic Laboratory Technicians to be based at the Forensic Enhancement Laboratory.
Responsible for undertaking a range of chemical and technical processes, the Forensic Enhancement Laboratory provides a region-wide service in forensic mark enhancement to further criminal investigations. The role is integral to the effective and efficient running of the laboratory - using chemical processes to develop finger marks as well as providing technical and clerical support to the team.
The role would suit those with a basic science qualification, or with experience of working in a laboratory environment, along with the aptitude for completing an in-house Forensic Laboratory Technician training programme. Basic knowledge of computerised databases is essential as is the ability to prioritise workload. An awareness of the requirements of ISO 17025 would be advantageous.
